I'd think that it likely died from either hypoxia or ammonia poisoning. There are a number of various factors that need to be maintained in order to keep fish alive. Unlike the husbandry of air breathing pets, with fish you must maintain an entire self contained environment, not just the animal itself.
You're probably best off, especially if fish death bums you out alot. I get stressed when my fish die, but no more so than if a tree or plant of mine dies, all non-social life is pretty much like the greeks as far as I'm concerned.
Oh well, just trying to cheer you up a little bit, as it seemed to me the fish was like a tiny cherry atop a misery sundae. I hope your sadness resolves itself somehow. Let me know If I can help in any way.
